"But, um, Actually that is not, um, how it happened in the comic. This movie will suck."
This is what you will hear whenever a comic, or book, or other piece of media crossing over to another media. You will have the fans and Fan nerds complaining about it.
Blame the Internet
These nerds have always existed. But they never had a voice, and everyone used to know not to listen to most of what they had to say. I bet (insert super old time that this could happen, like shakespeare)
But now, because of the open internet (lets keep it that way) the nerds have a voice. They have a soap box to stand on, and people actually listen to them. We have Blogs, forums, comment sections on the news article, Youtube channels, Twitter, vine, Facebook, these nerds are everywhere. And their negative, or sometimes positive opinions spread like wildfire. It usually takes only one nerd to have a bad opinion, like, eww, Ben Afleck as Batman, NO, not my Batman. Then it spreads, and spreads, and spreads so much that even your grandma somehow thinks that Affleck as The Batman is a bad idea. And she does not even know who these two people are.
But should we listen to them?
Are the nerds to be trusted? Would the super fans lead you astray? After all, they are the fan, or expert on this certain thing, maybe they know what they are talking about? The answer is....Most of the time NO.
Yes they may know what happened in the book, but usually when you make a book into a movie, you have to change things, for a few reasons. Most of the time, what happens in the book does not translate well to film. For example, for most superhero comics, the costumes look fine in the comic, like Hawkeye (he wears all purple), but would look really stupid in a movie. In most Batman comics, he is wearing skin tight clothes to see every museule. In a movie that would look really dumb and cheap. Sometimes the by the time they get to actually making a movie about a comic book storyline, it is dated and they have to modernize it to make it relevant.
The internet gets things wrong all the time. Remember when they said they were going to make a new Batman, and they were going to have Christian Bale play him in a Darker retelling. The internet lost their collective minds. Saying it would suck and WB does not know what they are doing. They complained that the director, Christopher Nolan in an interview about the film, that he has never read a Batman comic. And because of that, he cannot make a good Batman Movie, and it goes on and on like that. And now those movies are in the top 50 of IMDB's 250 Best rated movies.
What is to be done?
I have heard some people say that they need to settle down. And I mostly agree. It is a great time to be a nerd. It is popular to like comic book stuff, or whatever thing your into. And it is good to be passionate about something. But it is not cool to yell at the people that are making the movie you want made and tell them they suck. Feedback is good, and actually makes these movies better. Like the new Star Wars, it seems that the makers are taking the general complaints from the prequels, and making changes to make it better.
So, What is to be done. Really nothing. There is nothing we can do to stop this, nerds will argue on the internet. The only thing we can do is remind everyone to keep it to the issue and not to let it bleed to what our Mom's do every night....
And I am okay with it. It means that, even as annoying as it is to listen to these nerds, it means that the internet is still free and open. And you can always click the little x in the corner if it gets too annoying, or take your little finger and keep on scrolling. You cannot change the nerd. Just don't feed it, he is similar to the Troll, another internet desiden, to be killed on sight.
It also means that you are free to nerd out on whatever you are into. That is the greatest thing about the internet, whatever you are into, there is probably someone out there that is just as crazy as you are. Embrace your weirdness. Just dont be a dick about it. Treat everyone awesome.
